Dr Ian Paisley became known as 'Dr No' for decades in Northern Ireland due to his opposition to any accommodation with the Republican movement.
He vehemently opposed the Good Friday peace agreement in 1998.
But he became a peacemaker when he entered government with Sinn Fein at Stormont as First Minister following an historic agreement in 2007.
"If you had told me sometime ago that I'd be standing here to take this office, I would have been totally unbelieving," he famously said after the agreement.
Dr Ian Paisley was a fiery and uncompromising politician throughout the Troubles who later in life underwent a dramatic transformation.
