Labour has held the seat of Wythenshawe and Sale East parliamentary by-election. Ukip polled in second place, bearing the Conservatives into third. The by-election was brought about by the sudden death of the serving MP Paul Goggins.
Labour leader Ed Miliband has tweeted congratulations to Mike Kane, who won the by-election at Wythenshawe and East Sale.
The Democratic presidential candidate may also have shown his cards on his choice of running mate.
