Ed Miliband to call for faster flooding insurance claims

Insurance bosses will meet ministers to discuss their response to the flood crisis. Victims have received £14m in emergency payments so far. Ed Miliband will call for faster processing of insurance claims when he too meets industry representatives.

Ministry of Defence: 1,650 troops on standby

The Ministry of Defence says that more than 1,650 personnel are on standby at a variety of locations across the South to help with the flood relief effort.

It also outlined the role that military personnel have played so far:

  • 100 personnel from Z Company The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers are arriving in Wraysbury, Birkshire and will start work shortly
  • More than 100 personnel from HMS Sultan helped to build sandbag flood defences at Datchet near Windsor
  • 100 personnel from Seventh Battalion The Rifles and members of the 9 Transport Logistics Regiment helped protect an electrical sub-station at Pingewood
  • Marines from 40 Commando are still assisting Somerset County Council
  • About 30 personnel are repairing flood defences at Chesil Beach in Dorset
