French President Francois Hollande has announced his split with his partner Valerie Trierweiler to the news agency AFP. It follows claims he had an affair with actress Julie Gayet.
Francois Hollande visits First Lady in hospital
French President Francois Hollande has visited First Lady Valerie Trierweiler in hospital for the first time since she was admitted, amid reports of an alleged affair last week.
An official at the presidential palace said Mr Hollande visited the 48-year-old journalist yesterday.
Ms Trierweiler's condition is said to be improving after she was admitted to an unspecified hospital for rest a week ago.
The president's office said she experienced a "crisis of nerves" on learning of a report in French magazine Closer that Mr Hollande has been having an affair with actress Julie Gayet.
