Russia beefs up security around Winter Olympics

Security around the Russian Winter Olympics will be stepped up one month before the games are due to start in Sochi after a spate of suicide bombings last month, officials have said.

The heightened security comes amid fears of attacks from Islamists in the nearby Caucasus, after 34 people were killed in two suicide bombings in the southern Russian town of Volgograd last month.

The two week sporting event, often referred to as the "Putin Games", were already due to be manned by a 37,000-strong contingent of Russian armed forces.

They will now be joined by armoured vehicles, army soldiers and a navy contingent patrolling the Black Sea when the games kick off on February 7, the Federal Security Service announced.
