Survivors are 'walking like zombies looking for food'

Survivors of one of the most powerful storms ever recorded are "walking like zombies looking for food" as the Philippines struggles to cope with the devastation caused by super Typhoon Haiyan.

The national government and disaster agency have not confirmed the latest estimate of deaths, but a senior police official claimed at least 10,000 people have been killed in the disaster.

As rescue workers struggled to reach devastated villages along the coast, survivors foraged for food as supplies dwindled or searched for lost loved ones.

"People are walking like zombies looking for food. It's like a movie." said Jenny Chu, a medical student in Leyte.

Witnesses and officials described chaotic scenes in Leyte's capital, Tacloban, with hundreds of bodies piled on the sides of roads and pinned under wrecked houses.
