Kent prison disorder resolved

The Prison Service says an incident at Maidstone Prison, involving 40 inmates, has now been resolved without injury. National resources were deployed to deal with the incident. A second incident at Rye Hill prison in Warwickshire was also resolved.

UK prisons are 'safe and secure'

The Prison Service said all its prisons run a "safe and secure regime" after disturbances broke out at two jails yesterday.

A spokeswoman said:

All our prisons run a safe and secure regime and are staffed appropriately.

We are currently introducing reforms to the prison system that will provide better value for taxpayers while protecting the public and improving the chances of prisoners being rehabilitated.
