President Obama said he believed that a deal could be reached with Iran but urged caution given the historical "deep mistrust" between the countries.
"We're mindful of all the challenges ahead," Obama said.
"The very fact that this was the first communication between an American and Iranian president since 1979 underscores the deep mistrust between our countries but it also indicates the prospect of moving beyond that difficult history."
"The test will be meaningful, transparent and verifiable actions."
The Democratic presidential candidate may also have shown his cards on his choice of running mate.
The US president also shared a post on Twitter accusing Dr Anthony Fauci of misleading the public over hydroxychloroquine.
