US politicians are calling for a review into how the suspected gunman in Monday's rampage at the Washington Navy Yard received and maintained a security clearance, despite a history of violent episodes.

Shooting suspect 'arrested in 2010 over firearm claim'

The Washington Post reports the following about the Navy shooting suspect Aaron Alexis:

  • Worked as a full-time Navy reservist for almost four years
  • Served at Naval Air Station Fort Worth in Texas for majority of this time
  • Qualified as a Navy aviation electrician in December 2009
  • Received two military awards
  • Arrested in 2010 for illegally discharging a firearm in his apartment, according to a local newspaper.
  • Discharged in January 2011 for unknown reasons
