Alex Cuthbert's second half try and conversions from Leigh Halfpenny put the Lions ahead.
Australia were decimated by injuries with several players stretchered off the field throughout the match.
The game came down to a nail biting finish with Australia given a penalty in the final minute which would have secured victory for them.
But kicker Kurtley Beale slipped and failed to convert the penalty.
