Istanbul's night sky has been clouded in thick smoke after protesters fired a stream of fireworks and flares in the latest clashes with Turkish police near Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's office.

The country has been gripped by days of violent dissent against the government.
Anti-government protesters and police have been fighting a running battle for control of Istanbul's Taksim Square on an 11th day of clashes.
