Chaudhry Zulfikar, the lead prosecutor, investigating the 2007 assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, has been shot dead while leaving his home.
Mr Zulfikar was gunned down as he drove to court in the capital Islamabad, a female passerby was also killed during the attack, police said.
The Democratic presidential candidate may also have shown his cards on his choice of running mate.
