The owner of TopShop has joined other retailers including Primark and H&M in signing up to a deal on better safety checks in Bangladesh aimed at preventing any repeats of the building collapse that left more than 1,000 workers dead.

Trapped woman 'killed by fire' started by rescue effort

A woman is believed to have died amidst the rubble of a collapsed building in Dhaka as a result of a fire started by machinery that was being used to rescue her.

The fire broke out late on Sunday night and sent smoke pouring from the piles of shattered concrete. Officials are reported to have said it was caused by sparks as rescuers tried to cut through a steel rod to reach the woman.

Officials believe the fire is likely to have killed the trapped woman, army spokesman Shahinul Islam said.
