Escaped murderer arrested by police in Manchester

A convicted murderer who fled prison while on day release has been arrested by police and later charged.

Brian Lynch fled from Preston city centre last Thursday while on a day trip from nearby HMP Kirkham. He was jailed in 1988 for the killing of 21-year-old Chi Yeung Yip in Clayton, Manchester.

The 44-year-old was arrested this morning at an address in Manchester. A 40-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of harbouring an escaped prisoner.

Lynch has since been charged with escaping from custody and will appear before Preston magistrates tomorrow, a police spokesman said.

The woman arrested has been released on bail until next month, pending further inquiries.
