Former South African president Nelson Mandela is "much better", the government says, as the Nobel laureate recovers in hospital after undergoing surgery.
The presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said:
"President Jacob Zuma joined Graca Machel and members of the Mandela family in order to visit former president Mandela to wish him Happy Christmas in hospital in Pretoria this morning.
"President Zuma says he found him in good spirits.
"He shouted President Zuma's clan name 'aah Nxabalala' as he walked into the ward. He was happy to have visitors on this special day and according to President Zuma looking much better."
The 94-year-old will receive home care in Johannesburg after nearly three weeks of hospital treatment for gallstones and a lung infection.
