Britain braced for more snow

Around 1cm of snow settled in parts of northern England and Scotland on Saturday, as freezing temperatures and ice swept the UK. More snow is predicted to fall today.

Met Office issues two severe cold weather alerts

The Met Office has issued a severe cold weather alert for North East England and Yorkshire and the Humber.

It also issued lower level alerts for North West England, West Midlands, East Midlands and the East of England.

The Met Office said, "Cold weather is expected to continue through to Sunday with widespread overnight frosts expected".

"Rain may be preceded by hill snow over the Pennines before less cold conditions become established", it added.
