The quakes, which measured up to 5.6 magnitude according to the US Geological Survey, hit mostly mountainous areas in the Yunnan and Guizhou provinces.
Officials in Yunnan said 6,650 houses have been destroyed and 430,000 others were damaged, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The Democratic presidential candidate may also have shown his cards on his choice of running mate.
