Britain fails to pick up a medal

Britain's hopes of a golden start to the Olympics were dashed today as the nation failed to pick up a medal. Huge crowds turned out to line the route of the 250km men's road race, the weather was good and there were no reported transport problems.

TEAM GB SUCCESSES

Table Tennis: Middlesbrough's Paul Drinkhall has won his first round match against Kuwait's Ibrahem Al-Hasan 4-0. Second round match tomorrow at 13:30.

Football: Team GB Women made it two victories in as many games, defeating Cameroon 3-0. The second goal from Jill Scott was particularly impressive.

Swimming: Ellen Gandy is through to the final of tomorrow's women's 100m butterfly after coming fifth in her semi-final.

FOREIGN MEDALS

Fencing: Italy win Gold, Silver and Bronze in the women's individual foil! Valentina Vezzali won bronze, her eigth Olympic medal.

Weightlifting: Wang Mingjuan of China has won gold in the 48kg weightlifting after managing to lift 110kg.

Archery: Italy beat the US in the men's team archery final to win gold.

Swimming: Ryan Lochte wins Gold in the men's 400m individual medley in 4:05.18 - the first of the USA's golds this Games. Phelps comes fourth.

Swimming: China's Sun Yang clinches gold in the men's 400m freestyle but fails to set a new world record.

Swimming: China's 16-year-old Ye Shiwen wins gold in Women's 400m Individual Medley and sets a new world record of 4:28:43.

DISAPPOINTMENTS

Beach Volleyball: GB Men Steve Grotowski and John Garcia-Thompson defeated by Canada in their first game.

Tennis: The Murray brothers are beaten by Austria's Jurgen Melzer and Alexander Peya in three sets.

Tennis: GB's Anne Keothavong goes down 2-1 despite being one set up against former World Number One Caroline Wozniacki.

Swimming: GB's Fran Halsall comes seventh in the women's 100m butterfly semi finals and is very unlikely to qualify.

Swimming: GB's Hannah Miley finishes fifth in the Women's 400m Individual Medley.
