Lawyers for former Senator John Edwards said his client committed "many sins but no crimes" and said the charges against him should never have been brought to trial.
Edwards was found not guilty of one count of campaign fraud, and the jury were unable to reach a verdict on the remaining five counts, forcing the judge to declare a mistrial.
The Democratic presidential candidate may also have shown his cards on his choice of running mate.
The US president also shared a post on Twitter accusing Dr Anthony Fauci of misleading the public over hydroxychloroquine.
