In the sentencing of two teenage girls for the murder of Angela Wrightson, Judge Mr Justice Globe referred to an "emotional letter" from Angela's mother.
He said: "She (Angela's mother) will never be able to blink away the horrifying image of her daughter's battered body when she saw her in the mortuary. She cannot understand how you could have been as violent as you were. She's not alone in that."
Two teenage girls have been given life sentences, in a case that raises alarming questions for authorities in Hartlepool.
Two teenage girls have each been jailed for life with a minimum term of 15 years for the murder of Angela Wrightson.
The girls, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will attend Leeds Crown Court for sentencing later today.
