Emergency services are worried about the whereabouts of one person who they fear may have been inside the building engulfed by fire in central Newcastle today (December 1).
Firefighters have been unable to go inside the premises on Cross Street.
Northumbria Police say they do not know whether anyone is in the building.
They are liaising with the with the family of the person currently unaccounted for, and supporting them.
Tributes have been paid to the victim of a large fire in Newcastle. Brian Sandells, 81, was a well known figure in the city for decades.
Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service say it is believed the fire victim may be 81-year-old Brian Sandells.
A body has been recovered from the the site of the Newcastle city centre fire this afternoon (December 2).
