Man dies after police called to a house in Houghton-le-Spring

An investigation is underway after a man died after police were called to a house in Sunderland on Monday night.

Police were searching the address on High Street just off Easington Lane in Hougton-le-Spring when the 43-year-old became unwell. Paramedics were called to the address but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been called in following the incident.

A spokesperson from Northumbria police said:

"Enquiries are ongoing into the incident and due to the contact between officers and the man the matter will be referred to the IPCC, as is procedure in the circumstances."
