Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse and Manchester United defender Jonny Evans have both been suspended by the Football Association after a spitting incident during Wednesday night's Premier League match at St James' Park.

Both players were charged in relation to an alleged breach of FA Rule E1[a] in that in or around the 38th minute of the fixture they spat at each other.

Cisse accepted the charge and has been given a seven-match ban, which is the standard penalty for this offence, with an additional one match as he had previously been charged with violent conduction this season.

Evans denied the charge but has been given a six-match suspension after an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing took place on Friday.

The FA verdict means Cisse will miss Newcastle's upcoming Premier League games against Everton (a), Arsenal (h), Sunderland (a), Liverpool (a), Tottenham (h), Swansea (h) and Leicester (a).
