A jury has cleared a man of murdering Middlesbrough woman Theresa Ryan, who died in a fire at her home after celebrating her 50th birthday.

Ms Ryan died during a blaze at her home on Warton Street in North Ormesby on July 9, 2014.

David McCabe admitted burgling Ms Ryan's home twice, but after a trial was today cleared of her murder.

He was jailed for 5 years and 6 months.

The investigation into the death of Teresa Ryan has been both complex and protracted. I am disappointed but accept the decision of the jury today. However McCabe has been found guilty of two horrific burglaries.

“Teresa was a vulnerable lady living alone who was systematically targeted by David McCabe, who used the property and money he stole from her to fund his drug habit.”
