Firefighters trying to force roof in to contain blaze

Fire crews at Crathorne Hall near Yarm are using water to try and force in the roof of the hotel to contain a major fire which spread through a wing.

Around 100 firefighters are on site, with smoke billowing from the roof hampering their efforts.

"You have the difficulty of breaking through from the outside as well as the inside.

"And of course by its nature, a roof is boarded off and it's very difficult to see where the fire's spread to.

"The main thing we're trying to do is stop the fire spreading from the east wing to the main hotel."

– Dave Drybrugh, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue

The main part of the building remains unaffected but couples due to hold their weddings at the hotel this weekend have told ITV News Tyne Tees that the venue has confirmed they will not be going ahead.

"We are making contact with people who are staying with us over the next few days, because clearly we're not going to be operational.

"When we get the building back [from firefighters] we will then assess the impact on our business."

– Douglas Waddell, Operations manager, Hand Picked Hotels
