Two men have been arrested after a man was stabbed in North Shields early on Saturday morning.
The 43-year-old was taken to hospital with a wound to his thigh but died later in the morning.
Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Musgrove, from Northumbria Police's Major Crime Team, said: "Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing.
"We know it will cause concern in the community but I'd like to reassure residents that we believe all those involved were known to each other and we have made two arrests.
"We'll also have extra officers on patrol in the area and I'd ask anyone with concerns or issues to speak to them.
"I'd appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward as they could have information vital to our investigation."
