Vets and RSPCA officers who released an injured swan back into the wild said it could not have gone any better - because her mate was still waiting for her after ten days and the pair swam away together.
The swan was found with injuries caused by a crossbow last week in Lynemouth, Northumberland. It was rescued and underwent surgery. Vet Sam Prescott said the swan had done "magnificently well".
"I would personally like to thank the local community for their amazing donations of food, toiletries and clothing. "
Owners John and Irene Hays say there is ''light at the end of the tunnel'', after the pandemic forced them to close 650 UK stores.
There has been resistance to calls to dismantle memorials to the explorer.
