Now its dedicated weightloss unit is one of the busiest in the country - carrying out operations on patients from North Yorkshire to Cumbria.
The hospital is carrying out an increasing number of weight loss operations, last year performing 1,500 bariatric-related surgeries.
The ward is the subject of a documentary which airs on ITV this evening. The programme, Weight Loss Ward, follows the stories of the staff and the patients in the unit.
