A hospital unit in the North East has become the leading medical team when it comes to weight-loss surgery. Sunderland was one of the first places in the country to recognise the need for surgery to treat obesity.

Sunderland was one of the first places in the country to recognise the need for surgery to treat obesity.
Now its dedicated weightloss unit is one of the busiest in the country - carrying out operations on patients from North Yorkshire to Cumbria.
The hospital is carrying out an increasing number of weight loss operations, last year performing 1,500 bariatric-related surgeries.
The ward is the subject of a documentary which airs on ITV this evening. The programme, Weight Loss Ward, follows the stories of the staff and the patients in the unit.
