Now, its dedicated weightloss unit is one of the busiest in the country, carrying out operations on patients from North Yorkshire to Cumbria.
The ward is the subject of a documentary on ITV this evening.
Weight Loss Ward follows the stories of the staff and the patients, as Rachel Sweeney reports.
