The National Trust said more than 7,000 have died from bird flu at precious colonies across the UK this year.

The National Trust said about a quarter of this year's Arctic tern chicks have been wiped out at Long Nanny, on the Northumberland coast.

The Farne Islands, off the Northumberland coast, are home to about 43,000 pairs of puffins, terns, guillemots and eider ducks.
