Fire extinguished at Newcastle Swing Bridge

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue say about 25 square metres of wooden staves under the bridge were alight.

The cause of the fire is not known.

Fire extinguished at Newcastle Swing Bridge

Firefighters have extinguished a fire at the Swing Bridge in Newcastle.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue received a call at 1pm reporting a fire under the bridge. Three crews from Newcastle, including a fireboat crew, and a crew from Gateshead attended the scene.

It is not known how the fire started.

The fire involved approximately 25 square metres of wooden staves on a pontoon underneath the bridge. The fire service say it was quickly contained, and the last crew left the incident at 3.15pm after checking for any possible hotspots.

Newcastle Swing Bridge still open to traffic

Newcastle Swing Bridge is still open to traffic despite fire crews tackling a fire underneath it.

The Port of the Tyne say traffic has been reduced to a single lane after fire crews were called to the scene.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service was called to the Swing Bridge at lunch time today after reports of smoke at the edge of the east end of the central jetty and smouldering in timbers underneath the bridge. Traffic across the bridge has been reduced to a single lane."
