The Herring Girls who helped North Shields Fish Quay boom

The North East has a rich fishing heritage and in North Shields sculptures pop up on the Fish Quay to celebrate those who were part of it.

The most recent is the Herring Girl, a tribute to the many women from all over the country who came to Tyneside during the herring season.

They were fiery, strong and without them the fishing industry would not have been as booming as it once was.

Newcastle witch trials: A little known history and one of the largest mass hangings in the nation's past

One of the country's largest mass hangings of 'witches' in English history took place in the North East 374 years ago - but little is known about it.

On 21 August 1650, 16 people - 15 women and 1 man - were hanged on the Town Moor in Newcastle.

The story behind the trials and those accused remains a mostly untold chapter in the city's past.

A look behind the scenes of Coquet Island - the wildlife sanctuary reserved only for birdlife

One mile off the Northumberland coast from the village of Amble lies an avian paradise.

Reserved exclusively for birds, Coquet Island is an internationally important habitat home to 40,000 breeding seabirds.

Other than staff and volunteers from the RSPB, people cannot set foot on the island, but ITV News Tyne Tees was granted exclusive access - giving a unique chance to see what happens behind the scenes.

On the trail of Dracula in the seaside town which inspired its creation

Dracula. He is the definitive vampire and one North Yorkshire town's most famous visitor.

One hundred and twenty-seven years after being brought back from the dead, Bram Stoker's creation is back to life on the page in a new illustrated edition of the seminal horror.

The setting of its latest publication is the very same place that provided inspiration for the novel, Whitby.

How Roseberry Topping has become one of our region's most loved natural landmarks

It is a favourite destination of families looking for fresh air, fun and a challenge.

For others it is a training ground for tackling bigger peaks.

Distinct and instantly recognisable on the landscape, Roseberry Topping is one of the region's best loved landmarks. But how did it get its distinct shape and who helps look after it?

The Darlington man at the heart of the golden age of explorations

Revisiting the journey of Bentley Beetham, the schoolmaster chosen to brace Mount Everest in 1924.

This year marks 100 years since the teacher from County Durham set off on what would become one of the most talked about and ill-fated explorations of the early 20th century.

The target was one of the last great challenges of exploration on the planet at the time.
