A Northumberland motorist has appeared in court accused of leaving a pedestrian with "life-changing" injuries following a collision.

John Stewart was alleged to have been driving a van dangerously when he struck a woman walking along Riverside Road, in Alnmouth, leaving her with catastrophic injuries.

The crash happened in the picturesque coastal town on 5 April last year.

Stewart, 47, of Argle Street, also in Alnmouth, appeared in the dock at Newcastle Magistrates' Court this week to face an allegation of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Ruth Forster, prosecuting, said the female pedestrian had been left with "life-changing" injuries following the collision.

She added: "This is not suitable to be heard here - the starting point, if convicted, is two years in custody."

Martin English, defending, said he accepted the case would be going to the crown court.

Declining jurisdiction, District Judge Kate Meek said: "I'm going to allocate your case to the crown court for trial.

"It's actually in the same building but upstairs. Your next hearing will be on October 9 and I'm going to bail you to be at that hearing. You're bailed to be there, which means you have a duty to be there.

"If you don't attend, a warrant will be issued for your arrest and an absconding charge will be laid against you.

"The case is also likely to go ahead in your absence. It's important you stay in touch with your solicitor."

Stewart was released on conditional bail to next appear before Newcastle Crown Court on 9 October.
