Man arrested on suspicion of murder following death of woman in Gateshead
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a woman in Gateshead.
At around 10:20pm on Monday 22 July, police received a report of a disturbance at an address on Appledore Close, in the Greenside area of Gateshead.
Emergency services attended and found a woman in her 30s with serious injuries consistent with being caused by an assault.
Despite the efforts of paramedics she was pronounced dead a short time later.
The woman’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.
A full investigation has been launched into the circumstances around the woman’s death and a man – aged 38 – has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
He remains in police custody.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Fenney, of Northumbria Police’s Major Investigation Team, said: "First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the woman who has sadly lost her life.
"We will offer them all of the support they need at this extremely difficult time."
Detective Chief Inspector Fenney added: "A full investigation has been launched into the circumstances of the woman’s death and we have arrested a man on suspicion of murder.
"Enquiries are at an early stage and we believe that those involved in the incident were known to each other and there is no wider risk to the public.
"Officers remain at the scene to carry out enquiries and anyone with concerns should speak to them.
"Witnesses or anyone with information regarding last night’s incident should get in touch with us immediately."
