Five crews tackle building fire in Newcastle
Fire crews spent the early hours of Monday morning tackling a building fire in Newcastle.
The blaze on Bermersyde Drive, in Jesmond, is now under control.
In the early hours of Monday, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) received a call about a fire at a building in the area.
Just after 1.30am crews were told that a building that had previously been a gymnasium and was undergoing construction, was ablaze.
No one was in the building at the time of the fire, and nobody was reported injured.
Group Manager Andy Lillford said “Due to the size and nature of the fire, we had over 30 firefighters in attendance and they were on scene for a number of hours.
“They were able to quickly contain the fire, prevent it from spreading and eventually extinguish it.
“There is a small presence at the scene this morning and we will continue to carry out enquiries to establish the cause of the fire.”
Emergency services previously warned nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed, due to smoke in the area.
Emergency services will remain on the scene.
In a tweet at 2.08am on Monday morning, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews are dealing with a building fire on Bemersyde Drive Jesmond."
"We currently have 5 appliances and an Aerial Ladder Platform in attendance. Please keep windows and doors closed if you live in the area."
