Police issue Newcastle city centre warning after two teenagers arrested
Two teenagers were arrested in Newcastle city centre after plain clothed officers spotted them fighting.
Northumbria Police has issued warnings to parents that their children face arrest. Crowds of 100 schoolchildren, some as young as 12, have been gathering around Eldon Square, Monument and Northumberland Street.
They had allegedly been drinking and "acting in an intimidating manner towards other members of the public".
The force has said patrols would be stepped up and children would be taken home to be spoken to in front of their parents, or even arrested.
These two teenagers were arrested by plain clothed officers after violence in the city on Sunday.
It was reported that the teenagers had organised a fight near Old Eldon Square. A spokesperson for the force though said that "as tensions began to boil over, those officers sprang into action and arrested them".
Chief Inspector Steve Wykes said the arrests showed the different tactics the Force will use to crackdown on disorder in Newcastle.
He reminded people that police officers do not always wear uniforms while on duty but can still be present at the scene of any disorder.
The two male teenagers – aged 17 and 16 – have since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
