Farewell, Jack Charlton: funeral procession will drive through Ashington

Members of the public will be given the chance to say goodbye to World Cup winner Jack Charlton, when the funeral procession drives through his hometown of Ashington.

There has been an outpouring of affection from the world of North East football and beyond following the death of the former Newcastle and Middlesbrough manager, commonly known as "Big Jack".

His death was announced on Saturday 10 July 2020. Charlton had been diagnosed with lymphoma and dementia. He was 85.

The funeral will take place in Newcastle on Tuesday 21st July. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only immediate family will be attending the service.

However, from 10am the funeral procession will drive through Ashington on its way to the crematorium and members of the public are expected to safely line the route.

The route will circle Newbiggin Road, North Seaton Road, Woodhorn Road, Alexandra Road and back to Newbiggin Road.

Jack's granddaughter and ITV News reporter Emma Wilkinson paid tribute to him, saying: "Beyond sad to have to say goodbye to my beloved Grandad, Jack Charlton. He enriched so many lives through football, friendship and family. He was a kind, funny and thoroughly genuine man and our family will miss him enormously."

Ian Lavery, the Labour MP for Wansbeck, whose constituency includes Ashington, is calling on the government to award Charlton a posthumous knighthood.
