Police separate rival groups as trouble flares at protest at Grey's Monument

Thirteen people who had been arrested over the weekend in connection with violence at protests in Newcastle have since been released under investigation.

On Saturday, police had to push back crowds with bottles and cans being thrown in the air as protestors gathered at Grey's Monument in the centre of Newcastle.

The event began peacefully, as hundreds gathered in support of the Black Lives Matter movement - set up following the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in America.

The trouble began around two hours after the start of the rally. A separate group formed directly opposite - many calling themselves Defenders of Newcastle.

There was a heavy police presence to bring the situation under control, with some minor injuries suffered by officers and a small number of protestors.
