Four prisoners taken to hospital after HMP Durham 'incident'
Four inmates at HMP Durham have been taken to hospital this evening with one said to be in a "life-threatening" condition.
The North East Ambulance Service was called to the building, on Old Elvet, shortly before 5.40pm.
A spokeswoman said six ambulances attended, along with specialist teams.
She added that four were taken to hospital with "mixed conditions" and sone of these men was in a "life-threatening" conditon.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice, the Government department responsible for prisons, said:
He also confirmed that their hospitalisation was not connected to COVID-19 and that no staff were injured or required treatment.
