Newcastle to host Scotland and Tees Valley to host Cook Islands in 2021 Rugby League World Cup

Newcastle and Tees Valley will act as the training bases for Scotland men's and the Cook Islands' men's teams respectively during the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

With 500 days to go until the opening fixture at St James' Park in Newcastle, tournament organisers have announced the different training locations for the 21 unique nations and 32 teams.

Newcastle is also hosting the tournament opening ceremony as well as three group fixtures at Kingston Park.

Jon Dutton, the tournament's Chief Executive, said: “Newcastle is an incredible city, with one of the most renowned fanbases in the world.

"There was no better place for Scotland’s men’s side, and their loyal fans, than Newcastle."

Councillor Ged Bell, cabinet member for Employment and Culture commented: "I am thrilled that not only will Newcastle host the opening fixtures of the Rugby League World Cup but we will also be the base for the Scotland men's team.

"Once again the eyes of the world will be on Newcastle as our reputation as a city that can host spectacular events continues to grow, we know how to put on a show and the Rugby League World Cup will be vibrant, colourful and thrilling.

It was a euphoric day for the Cook Islands when they beat USA and claimed the 16th and final berth in the men’s tournament. Tees Valley will play host to the Kuki’s.

Dutton said: “Cook Islands’ story is a fantastic one...They have brought tremendous passion and vibrancy to rugby league already.

"I am sure the whole of Tees Valley will be excited to adopt the Cook Islands squad as their own."

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “I’m delighted to be welcoming the Cook Islands to our area for the duration of the tournament, where they’ll be able to take advantage of the exceptional facilities and venues that helped us win our hosting bid.

“In this difficult and unprecedented time, we need something to look forward to and 2021 is shaping up to be another fantastic year of events that show we’re punching above our weight. From the rescheduled Killers gig to the rugby league world cup fixture itself, we’re continuing to get noticed on a global scale.

“I hope they are as excited to visit as we are to have them here!”

The fixtures for all three tournaments will be announced in the coming months.
