Woman to stand in 'trial of the facts' accused of murdering her mother

A woman is standing trial accused of murdering her mother.

Odessa Tammy Carey is alleged to have killed her 73-year-old mother, who had the same name and was found dead in Ashington, Northumberland, last April.

Ms Carey, 36, is not fit to plead or stand trial because she is too unwell but what is known as a trial of the facts is taking place at Newcastle Crown Court.

A jury will be presented with evidence and will be asked whether Carey committed the acts but will not be asked to find her guilty, although they can acquit her.

The case is set to continue on Monday.
