Prison officers and inmates injured in riot at young offenders institute
Four prison officers have inured during an apparent riot at a young offenders institute.
Staff at the Deerbolt Young Offenders institute in Barnard Castle reportedly "lost control" of a wing of the prison on Wednesday evening.
None of their injuries are thought to be serious.
It is believed that a Tornado Team, a unit of highly trained officers, were sent to the prison to reestablish control.
A statement from Durham Police said:
Deerbolt opened in 1973 on the site of a former army camp. The facility can accommodate around 500 prisoners.
A 2018 inspection rated the institute "reasonably good."
