Flamingo hatches in Washington Wetland Centre
A Chilean flamingo egg has hatched at a Washington wetland park, the first chic of its kind in more than four years.
Staff at the WWT Washington Wetland Centre heard the chic “croaking” from inside the egg on Tuesday – an important bonding ritual between youngflamingos and their parents.
The egg was laid on July 31, after a tumultuous period ofsummer weather created ideal mating conditions.
Heavy rain softened the muddy bank, making it a perfect nesting spot. A spell of heat and sunshine then led to “friskiness” among the birds.
Deborah Nolan, communications manager at WWT Washington:
Shortly after park wardens heard the “croaking” noise, the hatchling was spotted nestling beneath the wing of its parent.
Senior keeper Rhys McKie said the chic was “very exciting.”
“Flamingling”, as the staff are calling the flamingo chic, is yet to be named.
