Man dies following collision on A19
A man has died following a collision on the A19 in the early hours of this morning on Wearside.
Police received a report of a collision between a white Mercedes C-Class and a black Vauxhall Corsa on the southbound carriageway just after 1.45am.
It took place about three miles south of the junction for the A690 in Houghton.
Emergency services attended the scene and found that the Mercedes had overturned and that its three occupants were seriously injured.
On of the passengers, a 33-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two other male occupants were taken to hospital for treatment to serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing and specialist officers are supporting the family of the man who died in the collision.
The A19 was closed in both directions but it has now been fully re-opened.
