Going underground: tunnelling begins on £3.2bn mining project
Four years ago, work began on a huge mine beneath the North Yorkshire Moors.
The company behind the project, Sirius Minerals, expects to be extracting 10 million tonnes of polyhalite - a natural fertilizer - every year, by 2024.
Part of the masterplan is to create a 23-mile tunnel under the ground, linking the mine near Whitby, to the port at Redcar.
Today it moved a step closer, with the unveiling of giant tunnelling machine which was named The Stella Rose, which was powered up for the first time.
