Who are the candidates on the ballot for North of the Tyne mayoral election?

Voting registration for the North of the Tyne Mayoral elections closes at midnight tonight.

The candidates on the ballot are Labour's Jamie Driscoll, the Liberal Democrat's John Appleby, Conservative Charlie Hoult, UKIP's Hugh Jackson and Independent John McCabe.

The elected Mayor will be held accountable for and representative of the people of Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland.

People who are registered to vote in local elections from Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland are eligible to vote in the Mayoral election on Thursday 2nd May 2019.

The first elected Mayor will have a five-year term, which will be reduced to four years from 2024, so the next election will coincide with the Mayoral elections for other UK major cities/regions.

  • The Elected Mayor will be accountable and represent the people of Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland

  • They will ensure our voice is clearly heard by Government

  • The Mayor will champion the North of Tyne nationally and internationally

What powers will the North of Tyne Mayor have?

  • The Elected Mayor will chair the Cabinet of the North of Tyne Combined Authority, with access to a £600m investment fund over 30 years to support job creation across our area

  • That’s £20m a year to help grow the local economy

  • The combined authority have the option to set a council tax precept to pay for the Elected Mayor’s work (in agreement with the local authorities)
