Man fighting for his life in hospital after alleged stabbing attack in Walker

A man is fighting for his life after he was stabbed in a Walker street.

Police, ambulances and the air ambulance were called to Chatsworth Gardens near St Anthony's Park in Newcastle just before 10am on Wednesday.

A 37-year-old injured man was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Northumbria Police said the man's injuries were "consistent with a stabbing".

Five people have been arrested. Two men, aged 58 and 18, were taken into custody shortly after the incident, and Northumbria Police have since arrested a further three men.

All five suspects remain in police custody at this time while officerscontinue to carry out high visibility patrols in the area of the assault to reassure concerned residents.

One neighbour who asked not to be named, said he heard screams coming near the time of the incident.
