Soldier dies at Catterick Garrison after vehicle he was driving overturns
A soldier has died after a vehicle overturned at Catterick Garrison.
The Army has confirmed that 51-year-old Staff Sergeant John McKelvie died from his injuries on Monday.
The incident itself happened on January 29th.
Staff Sergeant McKelvie was driving the vehicle involved and had one passenger, a 30-year-old man, who suffered a broken arm in the incident.
In a statement, the Army confirmed it was investigating.
It said: "We can confirm that Staff Sergeant McKelvie was fatally injured during a vehicle incident on Catterick Training Area in North Yorkshire on 29th January and unfortunately died of his injuries on 4th February.
"The (incident) is currently under investigation, as is standard for fatal vehicle incidents, and it would be inappropriate to comment any further."
North Yorkshire Police also confirmed it was investigating the incident.
A spokesperson said: "North Yorkshire Police are investigating a serious single-vehicle collision at Gandale Camp, Catterick Garrison.
"The incident, which was reported to the emergency services just before 1pm on Tuesday 29 January 2019, involved a vehicle which overturned, and two military personnel.
"The driver, a 51-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to James Cook Hospital at Middlesbrough. Sadly, he died on February 4 2019.
"A 30-year-old man, the only other occupant in the vehicle, suffered a suspected broken arm. He was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.
"Enquiries are continuing to establish how the collision occurred."
Staff Sergeant McKelvie was serving with the Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry. He was based in A Squadron in Ayr, Scotland.
In a statement paying tribute to him, his regiment praised "a giant of a man" who had considerable military experience.
