The North East England Chamber of Commerce has responded to the news that car manufacturer Nissan has decided to scrap plans to build one of its models in Sunderland.

Nissan, who employs around 7,000 people at its plant in Washington, announced it no longer planned to manufacture its X-Trail model in Sunderland. It will instead produce the X-Trail in Japan.

Responding to the news James Ramsbotham, North East England Chamber of Commerce chief executive, said Brexit was making automotive business "harder".

Mr Ramsbotham said: "The automotive sector in this country is vitally important and needs to be protected. At present there is over-capacity in the EU so businesses like Nissan in Washington need every bit of support to be successful.

"Brexit is making this situation harder. The EU has also just signed a complex free-trade deal with Japan which is extremely concerning for our automotive industry if we leave with no deal, due to the sophistication of the sector's extensive supply chain.

"We need clarity on our future trading arrangements with the EU as the impact on our economy is now becoming so damaging."

Unite Union representatives are due to meet with Nissan bosses on Monday to discuss the situation. It's understood they will be seeking reassurances on jobs and future arrangements at Nissan's Sunderland site.

Nissan has not solely attributed its decision to Brexit, saying that new emissions standards and the change in the diesel market as other contributing factors.
