Two men taken to hospital after being rescued from the sea near Redcar

Two men have been taken to hospital after a search and rescue operation off the coast of Redcar on Saturday 12 January.

The RNLI says the emergency call came at 8.10am after a person at the South Gare dialled 999 to report a man being washed off the South Gare breakwater near the lighthouse.

Two lifeboats from Redcar were launched and were on scene within eight minutes.

RNLI crew who had traveled to the South Gare in a vehicle discovered a second man who had also been washed into the sea during the same event. He was given treatment by RNLI crew trained in casualty care until an ambulance arrived to treat the man and take him to hospital.

The incident involved UK Coastguard rescue teams from Redcar and Staithes, a UK Coastguard helicopter, the Great North Air Ambulance, NEAS HART teams, paramedics and Cleveland Police officers.

The condition of the two men is unknown.
